Question:
Connecting the ReplayTV DVR to your Cable Modem

Answer:

If you don’t already own a router, we recommend using one. The router will allow you to share your Cable Modem without needing additional IP addresses from your ISP. Additionally, some ISPs might only provide support for Windows or Macintosh computers and not Linux based devices like the ReplayTV DVR. For example, your ISP may require that you login or use special software on your PC in order to access the Internet. Please consult your ISP for requirements.

Example 1: One or more PCs connected to a Cable Modem (using a router)

If you currently have one or more PCs connected to your Cable Modem, it’s easy to add your ReplayTV DVR.

  1. Purchase a recommended router (if you don’t already own one) that your ISP supports and connect it directly to your Cable Modem.
  2. Connect the router directly to your Cable modem and turn it on. Follow the router’s manual to set the router up properly. The default configuration of the router is normally sufficient.
  3. You can connect the ReplayTV directly to the router or to a hub or switch that’s connected to the router. Follow the directions in connecting your ReplayTV DVR to you existing network to complete setup

Example 2: One or More PCs connected to a Cable Modem using a hub or switch (No router

This example assumes you do not wish to use a router. If you’re connecting your ReplayTV DVR directly to a hub or switch that’s connected to your Cable modem, you need to have an IP address from your ISP for your ReplayTV DVR. You may need to specify the IP address on the ReplayTV.

  1. Contact your ISP and verify that there’s no special software or login required for Internet access.
  2. Verify that no settings other than the IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, and DNS are required.
  3. Verify if your ISP requires the Mac address of your ReplayTV DVR for Internet connectivity. (Some ISPs require the Mac address of a network devices in order to automatically assign it an IP address)
  4. Follow the directions in connecting your ReplayTV DVR to you existing network to complete setup

Example 3: Single PC connected directly to a Cable Modem

If connecting your ReplayTV DVR directly to a Cable modem, you may need to an extraIP address from your ISP for the ReplayTV. You may need to use a router between your ReplayTV DVR and your Cable modem. You may also need to specify the IP address on your ReplayTV DVR.

  1. Verify that there’s no special software or login required for Internet access.
  2. Verify that no settings other than the IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway, and DNS are required. (For example, some broadband connections require that a DNS suffix be entered on your PC for Internet access to work)
  3. Verify if your ISP requires the Mac address of your ReplayTV DVR for Internet connectivity. (Some ISPs require the Mac address of a network devices in order to automatically assign it an IP address)
